Tub mats? Really?

Our hotel along the famed Rio San Antonio de Padua in San Antonio was beautiful beyond words. Exquisite from the outside entrance through the lobby to the elevators and, of course, to our elegant room, it invited us to relax in luxury. The service was exemplary.

Morning One. Everything about our stay on The River Walk to now had been perfect. The bathroom in our room was spacious and well-equipped. A Water Pik shower massage greeted me with fountains of steamy water.

Carefully I placed the rubber mat that hung over the side of the tub onto the tub’s floor. So far this was my only complaint. I hated those mats because a) they feel strange under my feet, and b) I am not 100% convinced that they do not hold bacteria.

I took what turned out to be a frightening step into the shower. My foot was half on and half off the mat. I was grateful for the half on part. Quickly I grabbed the soap dish on the wall for support and brought my other foot inside. I discovered the most slippery tub I have ever experienced. Saying it was like glass or ice is an understatement.

Every shower I took during our stay was taken carefully and warily because there was always a chance my foot would move off the mat. How discouraging. The steamy shower in the morning and the cool shower after sightseeing should have been exhilarating.

The hotel management is likely pleased with the look of their shiny bathtubs. Since they know they are on the slippery side, they supply those horrible mats. But do they honestly think the mat that doesn’t cover the entire tub bottom will prevent an accident and the ensuing law suit?

It’s no wonder OSHA has minimum standards for the slipperiness of floors and places like tubs. They realize the danger.

Slip and fall accidents cost businesses a minimum of $20,000 after x-rays and doctor appointments. And if there was a serious injury? I’ve heard of those accidents costing business owners up to $250,000. Ouch.

Naturally insurance companies will give liability breaks to businesses who take the time to get their surfaces slip-proofed by a reputable company. No insurance company wants to pay out $250,000.

Is there any real help for these business owners? One excellent company whose product has been used successfully for twenty years is PosiTive Solutions in the Kansas City, MO and Boulder County CO areas. You can contact them at www.PositiveSolutionsUSA.com

There’s nothing like safety for peace of mind.

  1. Generally the hotels I stay in have a small square towel for a shower mat. I use it and never worry about slipping or the germs. Sorry you didn't have a very good experience with that.

  2. the towel is a good idea, to be sure. I am grateful Positive Solutions offers a remedy that is safe, lasts very nearly forever, highly economical, doesn't waste water with more laundry needed, and of course is germ & bacteria free to every customer (and the housekeepers who have to clean the tub withOUT that mat or towel).
